Scope and Contents
From the Series:
Series contains the personal papers of Mary Allen DuBois Stone of Catskill, the wife of Benjamin B. G. Stone the artist. Within this series is a considerable selection of correspondence with members of Mary's immediate and extended family as well as her social circle in the community. Also included are materials of Julia DuBois Meserole and Frederick H. DuBois Stone, who were the children of Mary Stone's brother Joseph A. DuBois who died in 1863. Julia and Frederic were taken in and raised to adulthood by Mary and Benjamin. Julia would die tragically in 1887, leaving her husband Walter with their young daughter Katharine to whom the Stones would become something like grandparents. Frederic never married, and adopted the surname "Stone" in honor of his surrogate parents. Materials of Frederic within this series relate somewhat to his time as an employee of Allard and Sons, a firm famed for doing much of the design work on celebrated Newport mansions.
