Map of a Division of the Loveridge Patent

Item — Case: Flat File Drawer 14
Identifier: MAP 2022.0002

Scope and Contents

This survey map showing the extent of the Loveridge Patent is a copy of an original prepared for the benefit of Michael Van Vechten, Alexander MacDowel, Temperance Loveridge, and Hannah Loveridge in 1718. The copy was probably produced in the late 1790s and overlays features from the older original map, including a memorandum explaining the purpose of the subdivision, alongside features which didn't exist when the original was prepared. These additional features include the Catskill Turnpike road, later 18th-century homes built on the patent, a grid denoting the nascent Village of Catskill, and notations of persons who purchased parcels post-1718.

Shown on the map is the entirety of the Embough, a farming district in the southeastern corner of the Town of Catskill lying against the Hudson River. Wtihin the extent of the Embought are shown the locations of the homes of the 18th century residents of the district and lands beyond the Kalkberg or Limestone Hill extending westward towards the lands of the Abeel family along Kaaterskill Creek. Among the residents whose homes are shown are those of the Van Ordens and Wynkoops, Overbaughs, and Fieros. Parcels owned by John B. Dumond, the DuBois family, the Saxes, and Trumpbour family are also noted with an ink pen of a different color than those used for the rest of the map.
