Biographical / Historical

The Vedder Research Library's Manuscript Vertical Files are an artificial collection of materials which have slowly grown in scope since the founding of the Greeene County Historical Society in 1929. Many materials within the collection date to the Society's founding and were given by private citizens to Jessie Van Vechten Vedder during her tenure as Greene County Historian. Most contents in the collection are orphan single-instance documents or files which had been maintained by families simply because it was unclear what their proper context and disposition should be. As such, the Vedder Research Library organizes these papers by applicable township and agent or creator - an example folder title being "Catskill: Charles L. Beach" or, when township of origin is undetermined, simply by agent or creator - ex.: "Van Bergen Mill" or "Peter H. Sylvester Personal Papers."

Papers from Catskill and Coxsackie township feature heavily in the collection by nature of their original geographic size, but all 14 townships in Greene County are represented. Most materials within date from the mid 18th century through the end of the 19th, with notable exceptions dating to the beginning of the 18th century and possibly earlier (the Will of Mattys Hoogeteeling [Hotaling/Houghtaling] and pages from the original Van Vechten bible). Materials from the 20th century also appear throughout though not in a consistent or representative manner.
