Scope and Contents

Map is a survey composed by William Tolley on behalf of the heirs of Barent Staats Salisbury. The survey is described as being parts of lot 1, 12, and 13 as well as all of lot 2 of a parcel of land owned by Salisbury on his death. Shown on the survey is a long parcel extending between with several geographic features orienting the map. The parcel extends from the Susquehanna Turnpike near Catskill Creek in modern Jefferson Heights to the Athens Road as it enters the vicinity of modern Leeds. Shown at bottom left is Catskill Creek in the vicinity of Austin's Glen, and two buildings are shown on the Turnpike road itself - one ostensibly being the home of Barent Salisbury which once stood where the Route 23 Bypass now crosses over Route 23B.

Biographical / Historical

Barent Staats Salisbury (1743-1797) was a Great-Grandson of Silvester Salisbury, one of the original patent holders in Old Catskill/Leeds. Barent Salsibury served as an officer in the Contintental Army during the Revolution, and built a home in the Town of Catskill on his family's lands which stood through the end of the 19th century. A more detailed description of his life was published by the late historian Henry Brace in the 6 October 1877 edition of the Catskill Examiner.
