Anderson Collection, 1771-1859

File — Case: MSS Vertical File Drawer One
Identifier: Folder 23

Scope and Contents

File contains a remarkable assortment of original manuscript material related to the Fiero family. Many of the documents are land transactions, and many contain the name of John Fiero of Catskill.

Other present names include James Powers, Abraham Salisbury, Sybrant G. Van Shaick, Jacob Haight, Isaac Northrup, Andrew Dexter, Mary Dexter, Charles Abeel, Peter Schutt, William Wynkoop, and numerous others.

Of particular note is a hand written notice from 1780 by John Dumond noting the discovery of "a negro man named Peter supposed to be run away from his master" which is an interesting window into the Institution of Slavery as practiced in Catskill during the period of the Revolutionary War.
