Scope and Contents
File contains an agreement from 1914 between John E. Cairns and the Montgomery-Dotter Ice Company for the guaranteed harvesting and purchase of ice cut by John Cairns and stocked in the "Winnie Ice House" at Athens. The agreement goes on to state the conditions each party needed to meet to satisfy the purchase agreement, and the agreement was binding only for the Winter of 1914-1915. Also included is a separate onionskin sheet with a statement made by William Williams in June of 1929 to representatives of the Greene County Historical Society containing his written recollections of the beginning of the ice industry at Athens in 1865 with the construction of an ice house by John Jones south of the mouth of Murderer's Creek.
