Athens: Manuscripts [Miscellaneous], 1800-1900, 1942
File — Case: MSS Vertical File Drawer One
Identifier: Folder 84
Scope and Contents
File contains an assortment of unrelated single documents. The earliest of these items is a list of initial licenses granted, compiled by an unknown county official, starting July 4, 1800 following the formation of Greene County. The list names those granted what are presumably liquor licenses for the hamlets of Lonenburg [Loonenburg] and Catskill - neither of which were incorporated villages at that time. Names listed under Lonenburg are James Tod, David Shaw, and Henry Ritter. Under Catskill the names of Charles Whitney, James Bogardus, Stephen Root, and Caleb Street also appear. Crossed out are the names of Thomas Gibbs and another illegible name "Jonathan ____."
Two letters are included in the file, one from John C. Finch to his mother in 1814 and the other from John Moore to his brother in 1857.
Also included are two wedding invitations - one from Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Canfield Whiting for the marriage of their daughter Jeannette to Mr. Harry LeRoy Palmer at the Reformed Church on March 21, 1942. The other is from Mr. and Mrs. Floyd A. Mackey for the marraige of their daughter Jane Irene to Norman Scott Cooper, Jr. on October 17, 1942 at the reformed church.
Lastly there is a receipt from F. R. Lape, dealer in Drugs, from 1891, and a broadside advertisement for a Minstrel Show at the Magee Opera House to raise funds for the benefit of Rescue Hook and Ladder Company no. 1.
