Athens: Edith McBurney Wolfe Reed, 1922-1932
File — Case: MSS Vertical File Drawer One
Identifier: Folder 94
Scope and Contents
File contains papers related to various companies which Edith McBurney Wolfe Reed had a controlling interest in or held debts on. These include the Gladfelter Brick Company at Athens and the Cairo Railroad Company of which she was a shareholder. Within these papers is an interesting letter written by C. B. Gladfelter, director of the Gladfelter Brick Company, describing the company's financial difficulties in December of 1929, noting his inability to pay the interest on a mortgage Mrs. Reed held on the company which Gladfelter had been paying personally. The financial situation of the company, and the necessity of the letter he sent, were all likely preciptated by the onset of the Great Depression. Also within the file is a Supreme Court document concerning Mrs. Reed's assent to the dissolution of the Cairo Railroad Company.
