Scope and Contents
This map is a period copy of a survey prepared by William Cockburn for Donald McLean, Malacky Treat, and Lieutenant Niel McLean showing two tracts of land granted to them by the King of England in 1768. The full title of the map is as follows: "A Map of Two Tracts of Land on the West Side of Hudson's River Granted in Nov. 1768 by his Majesty's Letters Patent to Drs. Donald McLean, Malachy Treat, and Lieut. Niel McLean."
The first parcel, which sits against the northern edge of the Hardenbergh Patent along the escarpment of the Catskills, was 5070 acres in extent along the upper valley of the East Kill in the modern Town of Jewett. The map describes it as such: "This tract lies on the west side of the Blue Mountains about 14 miles from Hudson's River."
The second tract lies against the westerly line of the Catskill Patent in the vicinity of Rount Top in the modern Town of Cairo and is 922 acres in extent. The survey of this irregular parcel is notable for showing not just the parcel, which crosses the Shingle Kill between the Catskill Patent and lands of Van Bergen, but for also showing homes of settlers on that land. The home of Johannes Strope is illustrated standing just west of the parcel along the headwaters of the Shingle Kill. The map describes the parcel as such: "This tract lies on the east side under the Blue Mountains about 9 miles from Hudson's River."
The map additionally lists Persons employed in the survey, naming John Pierce, Johannes Strop, [illegible] Young, William Hume, and John Wigram.
