Biographical / Historical

In 1795 John Cantine was granted the tidal flats on the northern mouth of the Catskill Creek. The lands were divided into large tracts and subdivided in order to convey the land evenly by ballot to several proprietors a decade later in 1805. This map, prepared by John Kiersted on behalf of the proprietors (who go unnamed on this document) shows the color coded divisions or "classes" with a number and letter assigned to each subdivision of each lot. A table in the upper right gives a breakdown of lot ownership - the top of the table shows the large lot, or "class" and each column below shows what number lots appear in each class; likewise the left side gives a letter "A" through "H" for each proprietor and shows the lots they own in the corresponding row.

Of note on the map is a lack of detail concerning the built landscape at Catskill Point at the time the map was producted. The only clearly labeled features are the Ferry Slip shown at the edge of the granted lands, and Catskill Creek itself labeled as the "Cats-Kill."
