A Plan of the Flats on the North Side of the Catskill [Alternate Version 1]

Item — Case: Flat File Drawer 13
Identifier: MAP 2022.0010-7.12

Scope and Contents

In 1795 John Cantine was granted the tidal flats on the northern mouth of the Catskill Creek. The lands were broken into large tracts and subdivided in order to convey the land evenly by ballot to seven proprietors a decade later in 1805. This map, prepared by John Kiersted on behalf of the proprietors shows the color coded divisions or "classes" with a number and letter assigned to each subdivision of each lot. On this map, the names of the proprietors are given as such: [unknown] Van Gorden, Ira Day, George Clark, Garrett Abeel, [unknown] Clinton, and [unknown] Cockburn. Ira Day and George Clark each had multiple shares.

A table in the upper right gives a breakdown of lot ownership - the top of the table shows each large lot (or "class") and the corresponding column below shows what number lots appear in each class; likewise the left side gives a letter "A" through "H" for each proprietor and shows the lots they own in the corresponding row. The names of the proprietors given on this map include a key for which name relates to which letter.

Of note on the map is a lack of detail concerning the built landscape at Catskill Point at the time the map was producted. The only clearly labeled features are the Ferry Slip shown at the edge of the granted lands, and Catskill Creek itself labeled as the "Cats-Kill."
