Scope and Contents

This map of the Kiskatom Patent, lying north of the modern hamlet of Palenville in the western part of the Town of Catskill, was prepared by William Cockburn showing its division among three proprietors following the Revolutionary War. The patent was originally granted to Hybartus Livingston and Henry Beekman in 1718 and 1719, first as a grant of 390 acres and subsequently enlarged by 2000 acres. The proprietors of the patent upon its division in 1789 are given as Jacob Schermerhorn or his representatives (entitled to one half of the patent), John Reed and Susannah Reed (entitled to one quarter), and General Robert Van Rennselaer (entitled to one quarter). Numbers are assigned to each lot along with the name of the respective proprietor who claimed it. The names of current tenants of each lot (if there was one) and are also given and extant structures are shown on each parcel. The only landscape features shown are waterways and wetlands.

Total acreage of the patent is not given, but acreage of individual lots are given ranging from 14 acres to 136 acres in size. Lots number 17, 18, and 19 were to be sold off to pay the expenses of the survey and lot number 20 with the rights to a sawmill was left undivided.
