Item — Case: Flat File Drawer 6
Identifier: MAP 2022.0019-2.6
Scope and Contents
The full title of this survey is "A Map of a tract of land on the Northerly side of the Schoharie Kill in the Great Hardenbergh Patent the property of Bacon, Tomlison, and Day surveyed and run into lots in the Month of July AD 1786 by William Cockburn and John Cox." As such, the map is a highly detailed and color coded rendering of a more or less rectangular plot spanning from the Batavia Kill southward to the Schoharie Kill where it meets with the East Kill.
Built landscape features on the map include three roads: at the northern end appears the "Road to Catskill" along the Batavia, being more or less the same as modern State Route 23; along the southern end of the map appears the "Road to Little Shandecon [Shandaken]" being modern State Route 23A; running between the two is a path which corresponds more or less with modern County Route 17, meeting with the Road to Catskill in Pleasant Valley and with the Road to Shandaken near the confluence of the Schoharie Kill and the East Kill. One home is illustrated on the map, being the pioneer home of William Gass at the confluence of the East Kill and Schoharie Kill.
This map is particluarly remarkable for illustrating the situation of this area in the years immediately prior to its initial development. The communities at South Jewett, Jewett Heights, and Mill Hollow would all appear within a decade. For a more detailed summary of the disposition of these communities please refer to Henry Hedges Prout's "Old Times in Windham" published in book form in 1970.
