Survey of a Road Laid out by the Trustees of the Village of Catskill near the Home of Apollos Cooke

Item — Case: Flat File Drawer 14
Identifier: MAP 2020.0012-LOB 6.112

Scope and Contents

Map is a copy of an 1825 survey that was traced by Charles Van Orden showing the proposed route of a road commencing at the intersections of Main and Green Streets in Catskill and proceeding southeast along the route of modern lower Main Street heading to Catskill Point. The map is notable for its lengthy description copied from the Book of Roads, as well as for showing several interesting reference points including the homes of John Johnston, Abraham Van Orden, and the Luddington House. Also shown is the old route of the Turnpike road which ran somewhat south of the road described on a similar trajectory to the point but somewhat downslope. It is not known whether the surveyed route of the turnpike road was in use prior to the formalization of the survey of the current route as shown in this map.
