Catskill, Village of

 Subject
Subject Source: Local sources
Scope Note: The village of Catskill lies within the boundaries of the town of Catskill and is the second-oldest incorporated village in Greene County, founded in 1806. The village was founded at the location of an existing landing on Catskill creek which was utilized during the colonial period by farmers from the backcountry looking to ship and receive products which could only be transported via sloop on the Hudson River. Styled as "Catskill Landing," the community would come to be referred to as "Cats' Kill" or "Catskill" by the end of the 18th century. The community's initial growth was bolstered by its location; Main Street itself was the starting point of the Susquehanna Turnpike which was a major thoroughfare which and one of the primary routes available for settlers moving from southern New England into western New York and the Ohio after the close of the Revolution.
