 Subject
Subject Source: Local sources
Scope Note: Hunter is a township on the southern end of Greene County situated west of the escarpment of the northern Catskill Mountains. Originally settled around the close of the Revolutionary War, Hunter is the only township in the county to boast two incorporated villages: Tannersville and Hunter. Originally known as Edwardsville in honor of one of its prominent founders, the town was formed from a portion of Windham in 1813. It was re-established as the Town of Hunter the following year. A section of Hunter was partitioned to Saugerties in Ulster County in 1814, and the Town of Jewett was formed from portions of Hunter in 1849. Hunter is bounded on the south by Saugerties and Woodstock [Ulster County], west by Lexington and Jewett, north by Jewett, Cairo, and Catskill, and east by Saugerties and Catskill. Within its boundaries are the incorporated villages of Hunter and Tannersville, and the hamlets of Edgewood, Elka Park, Twilight Park, Haines Falls, Onteora Park, Platte Clove, and Lanesville. Also located within the boundaries of Hunter is the entirety of Kaaterskill Clove, Kaaterskill Falls, and South Mountain. Hunter is within the section of Greene County known colloquially as the "Mountain Top."
